South Suburban Major Crimes Taskforce (SSMCTF)

The Bedford Park Police Department are members of the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force (SSMCTF). These services include, but are not limited to, major drug related violent crimes including homicides, non-parental kidnappings, and other exceptionally heinous crimes when requested to do so by the Police Chief of the member agency with the approval of the Board of Directors.

The SSMCTF, under the Command of the Cook County Sheriff's Police Department and the Illinois State Police has the responsibility of supervising 54 South Suburban Police Departments who have assigned approximately 150 investigators. 5th District Swat

The Bedford Park Police Department is a member of the 5th District SWAT unit. The unit is comprised of members from participating police departments from the 5th District Circuit Court area. Members of the unit are highly trained police officers who are specifically trained to respond to High Risk Armed offender situations.

The unit was formed through a mutual need of services that a SWAT Unit provides, but local police departments could not provide with available resources. The collaboration of several police departments through a joint effort successfully put together a multi-jurisdictional SWAT unit that provides professional SWAT services in the Southwest Suburbs.

Among the services provided by the 5th District SWAT unit are high risk warrant service, barricaded subjects, crowd control and active shooter response. The unit provides cost effective SWAT officers to municipalities who would be hard pressed, due to their size and financial resources to respond to these situations on their own.

The 5th District Swat Team is overseen by a Board of Directors and maintains a rigorous monthly training schedule. In addition to Bedford Park, the following departments participate in the 5th District SWAT unit; Alsip, Bridgeview, Chicago Ridge, Countryside, Evergreen Park, Hickory Hills, and Worth.

K9

The Bedford Park Police Department endeavors to incorporate as many crime fighting techniques to the department as possible. To that end, the Department has established a police canine program for the benefit of the community's safety. The police canines and the canine handlers are used to assist the Bedford Park Police Department and other surrounding police departments with tracking individuals, building/area searches, evidence recovery, and narcotics detection.

The Bedford Park canines are certified annually in narcotic-contraband detection and train regularly so they are properly prepared to perform their various duties. The canine handler is responsible for the health and welfare of the canine and ensures that the canine receives proper nutrition, grooming, training, medical care, affection, and living conditions. The bond between the canine and the officer are extremely important to their effective working relationship.
